About Us

The Lilongwe City Council was established under the Local Government Act No. 42 of 1998 as a body corporate. The Council comprises the Political and Administrative arms which both derive their authority from the Local Government Act of 1998. The Political  arm is led by the Mayor who is an elected councillor. The mayor is in charge of 27 Wards each overseen by an elected Councillor.  In addition, there are four (4) elected Members of Parliament who represent the Lilongwe urban sector. There are also five (5)  ex-official members representing interest groups. The Administrative arm of Lilongwe City Council is led by the Chief Executive Officer who oversees nine (9) technical departments and devolved sectors, including Commerce & Trade, Engineering, Education, Youth & Sports Sector, Parks & Recreation, Health and Social Welfare Services, Planning & Development and Finance.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Bringing Reliable Water Supply and Sanitation Services to Lilongwe City

Lilongwe  Water and Sanitation Project is a World Bank funded project being implement by Lilongwe Water Board and Lilongwe City Council.  Through the project, at least half a million residents from the capital city are set to benefit from improved water and sanitation services.The World Bank has pumped in $100 million as total cost of the project. The project is to be carried over a period six years and it is composed of $75 million credit and $25 million grant from the International Development Association, a unit of the World Bank which helps the world’s poorest countries.

PROJECT INTENTIONS

Ending Challenges of Water and Sanitation in the City

The Lilongwe Water and Sanitation Project is one of the biggest projects in the water and sanitation sector to be undertaken by the City. It will help reduce considerably the challenges of water and sanitation in the City and enhance socio-economic development in the metropolitan.

In the Lilongwe Water and Sanitation Project, sanitation improvements will take about one fifth of the project funds. Statistics indicate that only about 5 percent of the population of Lilongwe city is served by a sewer system, while the majority relies on onsite sanitation systems such as pit latrines and septic tanks.

Sewerage Works

Rehabilitate and expand the city’s sewerage network.

Water Distribution

Construction of 27KM of transmission mains, associated pumping stations and storage reservoirs.

Improved emptiable latrines

5,000 new sewer connections in five years.

Supply chain

Cover additional 186KM to areas of the city currently not served with piped water.

Emptying Services

Providing business opportunities to SMEs working in the sanitation sector.
