Freedom of the City march
Lilongwe City Council (LCC) in November 2023 hosted the Freedom of the City march in collaboration with the Malawi Defense Force through Kamuzu Barracks Military Division.
Speaking at the event, Mayor of Lilongwe City, Councillor Richard Banda described the parade as a historical and important event, saying it symbolizes unity between the Lilongwe citizens and the men in uniform.
“The march will help bring sanity to our city and is an affirmation of the bond between military force and the citizenry”, said Banda.
In his remarks, 2nd Lieutenant Mphatso Gudu added that the purpose of the march is to show the mayor the kind of military force he has at his disposal and that they hope to have similar interactions with the council.
“There is a very big gap between the military force and the general public, so going forward, we would like to strengthen our relationship with the assistance from the mayor ”, said Gudu.
The freedom of the city march dates back to the reign of late Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
