About Us

The Lilongwe City Council was established under the Local Government Act No. 42 of 1998 as a body corporate. The Council comprises the Political and Administrative arms which both derive their authority from the Local Government Act of 1998. The Political  arm is led by the Mayor who is an elected councillor. The mayor is in charge of 27 Wards each overseen by an elected Councillor.  In addition, there are four (4) elected Members of Parliament who represent the Lilongwe urban sector. There are also five (5)  ex-official members representing interest groups. The Administrative arm of Lilongwe City Council is led by the Chief Executive Officer who oversees nine (9) technical departments and devolved sectors, including Commerce & Trade, Engineering, Education, Youth & Sports Sector, Parks & Recreation, Health and Social Welfare Services, Planning & Development and Finance.

The Lilongwe Water and Sanitation Project (LWSP) is a World Bank funded project with Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) as the implementing entity managing the project and directly implementing water supply related activities and Lilongwe City Council (LCC) as the beneficiary institution to the project focusing on implementation of sanitation improvements in Lilongwe City.

Lilongwe City Council and Lilongwe Water Board through the Lilongwe Water and Sanitation project is implementing a free sewer connection in some areas of Lilongwe such as Area 47 sector 3 and 4, Area 1 (Falls) and Area 49 Old and New Gulliver. Therefore, residents from these mentioned areas are being reminded to submit consent and application forms for the sewage connections. The deadline for submission of the consent forms is Friday 9th December 2022, this is due to contractor timeline to finish free sewer connections which is on 15th of December 2022, Failure to submit the consent and application forms implies that the residents will foot their own costs.
